## Description

Linear damping occurs when a potentially oscillatory variable is damped by an influence that opposes changes in it, in direct proportion to the instantaneous rate of change, velocity or time derivative, of the variable itself. In engineering applications it is often desirable to linearize non-linear drag forces. The damping ratio is a dimensionless measure describing how oscillations in a system decay after a disturbance. The damping ratio is the ratio of the damping coefficient in the system’s differential equation to the critical damping coefficient:
